HSK levels, realistic study hours, which programmes actually require which certificate, and how to plan a language year in China.
Vocabulary counts are official. The study-hour estimates are realistic classroom totals including homework, not the minimum to pass by luck.
| Level | Vocabulary | Cumulative study | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 150 | ~40–60 h | Survival Chinese; not accepted for degree entry |
| HSK 2 | 300 | ~80–120 h | Everyday conversation; some language-programme exits |
| HSK 3 | 600 | ~200–260 h | Entry to some Chinese-taught bachelor's programmes after a bridging year |
| HSK 4 | 1,200 | ~400–520 h | Common baseline for Chinese-taught bachelor's and engineering master's |
| HSK 5 | 2,500 | ~800–1,000 h | Standard requirement for medicine, law, humanities and most master's |
| HSK 6 | 5,000+ | ~1,300–1,600 h | Near-native academic reading; required by a minority of programmes |
An advanced HSK 7–9 band exists under the 2021 proficiency framework; degree admissions still mostly reference HSK 4 to 6.

Speaking is a separate test (HSKK), required by some Chinese-taught programmes and by TCSOL master's applications.
A full-time language year in China: 20 hours of class per week plus daily practice. This is the standard bridge into a Chinese-taught bachelor's.
Needed for medicine, law and most Chinese-taught master's programmes. Realistic only with sustained immersion, not evening classes at home.
Choose an English-taught programme. No HSK is required for admission, and you can learn Chinese alongside your degree at a much lower stakes level.
Enough for daily life, labs and internships in English-taught programmes. Many students stop here and improve through use rather than exams.
Attached to a university, 12,000–25,000 CNY per year, and the easiest route into that university's degree programmes afterwards.
See universities →Institutions whose entire intake is language students — faster placement, more levels, larger international mix.
See universities →Two to eight weeks, 3,000–8,000 CNY, usually with cultural excursions. A low-risk way to test whether learning Chinese suits you.
Pinyin, tones and the 300 most frequent characters. Tones first — retrofitting them later is the main reason learners plateau.
One lesson per week with a tutor plus daily 20-minute character review. Target HSK 3 reading comprehension.
Switch input to native material: short news clips, campus notices, menu apps. Add weekly speaking practice with a language partner.
Two full mock exams under timed conditions. Book the test only when mocks are consistently above the pass threshold.
Send us your current level and target programme — we will tell you whether you clear the requirement, and what the realistic timeline is if you do not.
